Mazunte is an idyllic fishing village at the Costa Chica, five minutes to go from San Agustinillo and 10 minutes by bus/taxi from Zipolite. Join Mazuntes travellers community and spend some cool nights with relaxed people of any "nation" of the world. Visitors here are younger and sometimes bring back the feeling of backpackers and hippy-culture. At the western end of Mazuntes beach you can make a 30 minutes walk-tour to the point most south of Oaxaca – Punta Cometa. The half round rock formation reaches out into the sea, young locals are fishing from up in the stones. Sunrises and sunsets there are unbelievable beautiful and you can compare it with that of “Southern End of Heaven” on Chinas Hainan-Island. Coming from San Agustinillo at the entrance to Mazunte you will find the "Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga" with its turtle museum. There are different kinds of huge sea-turtles protected in an aquarium and young ones are bread. Three times a year (December, April and sometimes during the summer) you can take part in the "Liberacion", the liberation of hundreds of baby-turtles. Beach and sea Surf is generally tranquil and swimming is best at the west end of the beach, the so-called "Riconcito". There is nearly no undertow but waves break very close to the shore, so take care. Ideal for snorkeling is the eastern end of Mazuntes beach, in front of the turtle museums backside. Just enter the water and after some meters you will find yourself amidst a coral aquarium. Accommodation Most visitors stay in one of the cheap cabañas, which you can rent between 50 and 250 pesos. Nice bungalows are about 200 - 500 pesos. Food and Drink Every restaurant or nearly every house in Mazunte offers fresh fish and sea fruits - Mazunte is a fishing village :-) Beside that the McPizza-fraction has also reached Mazunte. At least five places offer housemade italian (styled) pizza and spaghetti. Actually (september 2003) “Sushi Samurai” sells his fresh rice rolls on the beach. Tourist information Visit the "información turistica", the public tourist information center of Mazunte, on the mainroad of the village. They will help you to find an accomodation, organize snorkeling and fishing tours, offer phone-service and help in any case or kind of troubles. On the beach sellers from around offer beautiful multicolored hamocks, shirts and trousers. So don´t be naughty and bring your parents a handmade hammock fresh from the hammock-paradise Costa Chica! Communication For years Mazunte is waiting for phone conection yet for years. In autum 2003 Telmex wants to install it ... A lot of houses offer cell-phone and in summer 2003 opened a very fast satellite based internet cafe. How to get there Mazunte can be reached by taxi or "camioneta" from Pochutla or San Antonio (ask the bus conductor to let you off there and wait for a camioneta, the pick-up for public transport) on the costal highway 200.
